From Notes to Narratives: Storytelling Through Song
Music is a universal language, and songs are its stories. Each song carries a narrative, an emotional journey that the singer invites their listeners to join. As singers, our job is to tell these stories. To do this, we must first understand the story ourselves. We must delve into the lyrics, comprehend the emotion behind each line, and understand the character we are portraying. We must then use our voice to bring this character to life, to express their feelings and experiences. This involves not just singing the right notes, but also using vocal techniques like dynamics, tone color, and phrasing to enhance the storytelling. By mastering the art of storytelling through song, singers can create more engaging and impactful performances.
I’ve always enjoyed reading and writing as a child. But as I grew older I realized it was a way I liked to express myself and share stories. After going through a tough time a couple of years ago I ran to writing, poetry, and writing songs. My real breakthrough was when I began to share my pieces. I started sharing poetry at an open mic, where I met John Carr. Once I started taking his alignment classes it was so freeing to be able to push myself out of my comfort zone, to say what I mean and mean what I say. I saw major improvement in my performances and I still use the techniques I’ve learned to this day.

What advise would you give to someone that has a block when it comes to letting go?
Seriously the advice I’d give anyone is to take my vocal classes. You’ll see results instantly…..
I’ve always thought the lyrics were more important than even the beat!
The beat always captures my attention then Iyrics seal it
When you have random thoughts at various times throughout the day, how would you advise someone to start forming their narrative? Its challenging when I don’t feel I really have a niche.
